Aysgarth Falls Yorkshire Dales National Park Visitor Centre

Sightseeing attraction | Leyburn | England | United Kingdom

The attraction "Aysgarth Falls Yorkshire Dales National Park Visitor Centre" in Leyburn, England, is an outstanding destination for nature lovers and adventure seekers in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. This visitor center serves as an ideal starting point to explore the impressive Aysgarth Falls - a series of three waterfalls that cascade from the River Ure over a distance of almost one and a half kilometers into the picturesque Wensleydale. The waterfalls, known as Upper, Middle, and Lower Falls, are surrounded by lush forests and agricultural land, and offer a breathtaking spectacle, especially after heavy rain, as the water rushes powerfully over the limestone formations.

The visitor center itself is more than just an information point. It offers interesting exhibitions on the local ecology, history, and geology of the region, helping visitors to better understand the significance of this natural wonder. Additionally, maps and guides are available that highlight various hiking trails and viewpoints in the area. The waterfalls are not only a visual delight, but also a place of scientific interest, as they are designated as an area of special scientific interest. Visitors can with luck observe native wildlife such as deer, and efforts are being made to reintroduce rare species such as the dormouse.

The surrounding area of the center offers a variety of activities. In addition to the short, well-maintained paths to the waterfalls, there are longer hikes that lead through the idyllic landscape of the Yorkshire Dales, such as to nearby villages like Carperby or to the historic Bolton Castle. The trails vary in difficulty and are suitable for both casual walkers and experienced hikers. The area is at its most beautiful in spring and autumn when the surrounding forests shine in vibrant colors. For those seeking relaxation, the banks of the River Ure offer perfect spots for picnics, and the adventurous can try wild swimming - although caution should be taken regarding the currents after rainfall.

The visitor center is also well-equipped: there are refreshment facilities, including a cafe serving locally inspired food, as well as opportunities to purchase regional crafts. The facility is family and dog-friendly, making it a popular destination for outings. The waterfalls are easily accessible, with the Middle Fall also reachable for those with limited mobility, while the Lower Fall has steps that require a bit more skill. Parking is available, and it is advisable to arrive early as the site can be busy, especially on nice days.

In addition to its natural beauty, Aysgarth Falls also has cultural significance. The waterfalls served as a backdrop for scenes in the film "Robin Hood - Prince of Thieves," giving them a touch of fame. Nearby attractions include the historic St. Andrew's Church in the village of Aysgarth or the Wensleydale Creamery, famous for its delicious cheese. The visitor center thus serves as a gateway to a region full of history, nature, and tradition.

In summary, the Aysgarth Falls Yorkshire Dales National Park Visitor Centre offers a perfect combination of nature experience, education, and relaxation. It is a place that presents the majestic beauty of the Yorkshire Dales in an impressive way and invites visitors to enjoy the peace and diverse opportunities of this unique landscape. Whether for a short visit or an extended stay, this attraction leaves a lasting impression.

Fantastic walk around the falls and then beyond. Great facilities, all the footpaths with easy signalling. All in all, a first awesome experience that we are going to repeat.

Nice place for a stop on the way somewhere else. There is a nice cafe and plenty of parking. The waterfalls are very pleasant and so are the marked walks.

The three stepped waterfalls are pretty, and the path to see the middle and lower falls is a fairly 20-30 minutes easy round trip journey, though some slightly uneven steps towards the end to see them closely. It's free to see them, though the car park does have a moderate charge. The visitors centre at the car park is more shop and cafe though does have a few bits of information and adequate free toilets (though requests £0.20 donation).

Beautiful area with lots of relatively easy walks, many of them circular. The Falls are impressive especially after rain.

Aysgarth Falls is a fantastic place to visit, offering amazing views and plenty of well-marked, safe routes to explore. The trails are well-maintained, with activities and information along the way to keep things interesting. The car park costs £3.50 for under 2 hours or £5.50 for anything longer, which is reasonable given the facilities. The best time to visit is on a clear day after heavy rain, as the waterfalls are at their most impressive. The water is freezing, so probably best just to admire from a distance! Sturdy boots are a must, as the trails can get a bit tricky in places, but overall, it’s a great spot for a walk and to take in the scenery.

I can imagine that this is extremely popular during Spring, Summer and Autumn months as it is a place you may want to just sit beside, or in, the flowing waters, especially those of the Upper falls where it is much wider and the flow much slower than further along the Falls. Personally I preferred the middle and lower falls as these are faster flowing due to being narrower. Upper and lower falls are accessible on foot with ease so you can get very close. Pay and display car park for around 50 vehicles.

Decent car park, fairly priced and literally a spit from the waterfalls. Not too busy when we visited. Provided a nice base to walk and see the falls and then walk up and see the church on the hill. We also visited the cafe at the top of the hill for some refreshments. (Seperate review) My boys loved it here, nice to see the raw force of nature. When we visited the ground was frozen, I can imagine the falls area can become very boggy due to the foot fall.

Fantastic little visitors centre, really helpful staff that advised me which route was accessible for me in my electric wheelchair. The café at the back has fantastic coffee and cakes to warm you up afterwards!

A pleasant walk - the falls themselves are pretty but not dramatic. Some picnic areas available but can be a little muddy if it’s been wet recently.

Well guided walks and a good few routes to choose from. With great views of the waterfalls/river. Dog and child friendly. Pay and display machines take card which is very handy. And there is a cafe and toilets too. Just particularly muddy when wet (we went in feb 2025 time)
